My Wisdom of a Broken Heart book tour has taken me many places: DC, Durham, Asheville, Atlanta, Nashville, Austin, Boulder, and to the Shambhala Mountain Center where I taught a weekend workshop — and tried to catch my breath. It has been a privilege to sit and talk with people around the country about their broken hearts and witness the extremely touching, tender strength each has exhibited. We talk and cry. Some seem about to recover and others about to collapse—right now. Tomorrow, though, it could be completely different.
I have developed enormous respect for the capacity of heartbreak to destroy your story line (about who you are, what life is about, what the future holds) and the way it holds your feet to the fire of love. All you can think about is love—it’s presence, absence, how you long for it, how much you have to give.
Whenever I am about to give a talk on the topic, of course my own experience with heartbreak comes rushing back. I remember how shattered I felt—and how open. When your heart is broken, it is broken open and although I didn’t realize it at the time, it marked the first significant step on my spiritual path.
So here I am in my touring vehicle, telling a story about that moment. I also tell this story in the book. See if you can relate to it and if you see me whizzing by you, throw me some Kleenex.
