Lobsang Sangay, Tibet’s prime minister in exile, told a group he was speaking to in Washington that President Trump should meet with the Dalai Lama.
“Donald Trump… has been to all three major sacred places of three major traditions,” said Sangay, referring to Saudi Arabia, Israel, and the Vatican. “What is left is Buddhism and his holiness the Dalai Lama is the most prominent Buddhist leader in the world.”
Meetings with the Dalai Lama are generally fraught with political tensions, as China consider the Dalai Lama to be a dangerous separatist.
In February, the Tibetan government in exile reported that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson had affirmed the American government’s support for Tibet.
The Dalai Lama congratulated the president on his victory in November.
