On Friday, September 11, the New York Buddhist Church will rededicate its iconic statue of Shinran Shonin, the founder of the Jodo Shinshu sect of Buddhism. The ceremony marks the statue’s 60th anniversary in New York. It originally stood in a park in Hiroshima, where it survived the 1945 atomic bomb blast. On September 11, 1955, the statue was donated to the New York Buddhist Church, and has stood in front of the building on Riverside Drive ever since. To many, the statue is a symbol of world peace and nuclear disarmament.
The event, which will begin at 6:30pm, is free and open to all. Rev Dr. Mark Unno will deliver a keynote address.
