Professor David J. Kalupahana, a significant voice in the realm of academic Buddhist philosophy, is reported to have passed away peacefully at his Honolulu, HI, home on January 15.
After earning a BA in his native Sri Lanka, Prof. Kalupahana went on to earn a PhD in Philosophy at the University of London. After a stint teaching at the University Ceylon, he took a position at the University of Hawaii in 1972, eventually becoming chair of both the undergraduate and graduate philosophy departments. His influential publications analyzed early Buddhist literature as preserved in the Pali canon, as well as the fundamental Mahayana writings of Nagarjuna.
