The Gawker-owned feminist blog Jezebel has posted a critique of the Dalai Lama in response to comments he made in an interview with the BBC. In the interview, the Dalai Lama is asked if his successor, the 15th Dalai Lama, might be a woman. He indeed says yes, as he has done in the past, adding that he believes women should have more important roles in the world, and that “the female biologically [has] more potential to show affection… and compassion.”
He then goes on to add that “if a female Dalai Lama comes, their face should be very attractive,” and that, “otherwise not much use.” The interviewer says, “You’re joking, I’m assuming… Or you’re not joking?” To this, the Dalai Lama answers, “No. True!” He then adds a joke about his own attractiveness being the secret to his success.
