As the Tibetan Review has published today:
China said Mar 7 that any future reincarnation of the Dalai Lama must meet four criteria laid down by it but that there was no need now to excessively talk about the issue, according to the official Xinhua news agency Mar 7.
Another Xinhua report Mar 7 quoted Qiangba Puncog (pronounced as Jampa Phuntsog), chairman of the Standing Committee of the TAR People’s Congress, as saying at the same press conference: the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama must meet all the traditional requirements in four aspects: irreligious (sic) rituals, historical conventions passed on since the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912), lot drawing from the Golden Urn in the face of the Buddha Sakyamuni and the approval from the central government.
“Any claimed reincarnation that fails to meet all these requirements will be illegitimate and invalid,” Qiangba was quoted as adding.
Meanwhile, The Bangkok Post reports:
China on Tuesday accused the Dalai Lama of trying to “create chaos” in Tibet, on the eve of the sensitive anniversary of a failed uprising against Chinese rule that drove the Buddhist monk into exile.
Two years ago, protests in the Tibetan capital Lhasa to mark the anniversary of the March 10, 1959 uprising descended into deadly violence, prompting a massive security clampdown in the Himalayan region that is ongoing.
“If there were no anti-China forces or no Dalai to destroy and create chaos, Tibet would be better off than it is today,” the region’s Communist Party secretary Zhang Qingli said in an interview posted on a government website.
And Nepal is following China’s lead, trying to help cut off protest before it starts. Via Taiwan News:
Nepal has stepped up security and warned Tibetans exiles against organizing protests against China during the anniversary of the failed uprising that sent the Dalai Lama into exile, officials said Tuesday.
Home Ministry spokesman Jayamukunda Khanal said security around the Chinese Embassy and its visa office has been stepped up, with police guarding all roads leading to the area.
Khanal said the local representative of Dalai Lama, Thinley Gyatso, was taken to the chief district officer Sunday and warned that no anti-China protests should take place. […]
The protests are a source of embarrassment to Nepal’s government, which wants strong ties with China. Beijing has repeatedly asked Nepal to better control the Tibetan refugees within its borders and stop the protests.
And now Al Jazeera English is reporting that:
Tibetan exiles in India have stormed the Chinese embassy in New Delhi during a protest to mark the anniversary of the Tibetan uprising in 1959.
Police said nearly two dozens demonstrators were detained on Tuesday after they rushed towards the embassy gate chanting “Tibet belongs to Tibet” and “Free Tibet.”
