Buddhists are among the many religious groups responding to the crisis Hurricane Sandy brought to the East Coast, according to a couple of articles (see here and here) by Jaweed Kaleem of the Huffington Post.
In addition to participation in fundraising and relief, Buddhist practitioners are also offering meditation and mindfulness as practices that victims of the historic storm might use to help reduce stress.
Koshin Paley Ellison of the New York Zen Center for Contemplative Care has sent Buddhist chaplains to area hospitals to provide contemplative care for those who need it. In Kaleem’s piece for the Huffington Post, Ellison said, “Our chaplains provide contemplative care. It’s the kind of care given by someone who has their own meditation practice and uses that to bring to the patient an openness and reliability that the meditation practice is supposed to do.”
